The Kerala High Court has initiated a suo motu writ petition in relation to the continuing fire at a dumping yard of Kochi Corporation in Brahmapuram.

The matter has been listed before the Division Bench comprising Justice K. Vinod Chandran and Justice C. Jayachandran tomorrow.

The smoke that billowed out of the plant spread over large areas of the city, and could not be fully doused despite strenuous efforts over past two days.

"The repeated incidents of fire at the yard remains a cause of concern for local residents, and as per reports, plastic waste piled up at Kochi Corporation's solid waste treatment plant has gone up in smoke without fail every year since 2019. Despite repeated episodes, the authorities have not been able to take concrete action to check such mishaps," the suo motu writ petition states.

Justice Devan Ramachandran had submitted a letter to the Chief Justice in this regard, seeking the Court to intervene in the matter.
