The Madhya Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (MPSLSA) has launched a statewide week-long yoga campaign aimed at promoting the physical, mental and emotional well-being of inmates lodged in prisons across Madhya Pradesh ahead of the International Day of Yoga 2026.
The campaign was inaugurated on June 15 at Central Jail, Jabalpur, and was simultaneously conducted in prisons across the State through virtual mode.
Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and Patron-in-Chief of MPSLSA, Justice Vivek Rusia, inaugurated the campaign and participated in the yoga session at Central Jail, Jabalpur. Justice Gurpal Singh Ahluwalia participated in the programme at Central Jail, Gwalior, while Justice Subodh Abhyankar joined the session at Central Jail, Indore.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Rusia referred to the Bhagavad Gita dictum, "Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam" (Yoga is excellence in action), and observed that yoga is not merely the practice of physical postures and breathing exercises but the art of performing every action with dedication, awareness, discipline and equanimity. He said that regular yoga practice enhances physical fitness and serves as an effective tool for overcoming stress, anxiety and depression. He further highlighted yoga's transformative potential in promoting positive behavioural change, improving emotional well-being and building mental resilience among inmates, thereby facilitating their personal growth and rehabilitation.
For the implementation of the campaign, all District Legal Services Authorities and Taluka Legal Services Committees coordinated with the respective prison administrations. Principal District and Sessions Judges, judicial officers and officers of Legal Services Institutions participated in yoga sessions alongside inmates in prisons across the State.
The yoga session was conducted by yoga expert and psychologist Dr. Parag Jain, who guided participants through various yoga postures, pranayama and meditation techniques. He also delivered a session on mental wellness, stress management, emotional balance and positive thinking, emphasizing that yoga is a holistic discipline that harmonizes the mind, body and spirit while enhancing inner strength, self-awareness and overall well-being.
As part of its commitment to inclusivity, MPSLSA developed a dedicated yoga video for persons with hearing and speech impairments. The video incorporated sign language interpretation of yoga instructions and demonstrations, enabling hearing and speech-impaired inmates across various prisons in the State to participate effectively in the programme.
The campaign will continue from June 15 to June 21, culminating on the International Day of Yoga, with the objective of contributing to the holistic development of inmates and encouraging them to adopt healthier, more balanced and positive lifestyles.
Registrar General of the Madhya Pradesh High Court Dharminder Singh, Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, Jabalpur, Krishnamurty Mishra, Member Secretary of MPSLSA Suman Shrivastava, Superintendent of Central Jail, Jabalpur Akhilesh Tomar, Additional Secretary of MPSLSA Arvind Shrivastava, Secretary of DLSA Jabalpur Shakti Verma, Deputy Secretary of MPSLSA Aniruddha Jain and Legal Aid Officers Pradeep Singh Thakur, B.D. Dixit and Digvijay Singh were present at the programme.
