Rape convict Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was on Friday granted bail by a Special CBI court in Haryana’s Panchkula in a case of forcible castration of his followers.

The Special CBI court granted regular bail to Gurmeet but he will remain behind bars serving his 20-year imprisonment for raping two sadhvis at his ashram.

Gurmeet was represented by advocate Tanveer Ahmed Mir, Partner, Lex Alliance, and advocate Dhruv Gupta.

Mir sought bail on ground of parity with the two accused doctors in the case who have already been granted bail.

He also contended that there were only six people who are alleged to have been castrated as against the initial 400 and therefore, the case should be decided on its own merit.

Earlier, on August 23, Gurmeet’s plea for bail was rejected by Special Judicial Magistrate following which he went in appeal.

The CBI has chargesheeted Gurmeet and two doctors—M P Singh and Pankaj Garg—in the mass castration case.

The probe agency said the trio had conspired to castrate the followers and surgeries to that effect were conducted on its campus at Sirsa.

They were facing charges of criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons and cheating.

Some followers reportedly said Gurmeet convinced them that castration would lead to realization of Almighty.

Earlier, one of the followers of Dera who was also castrated and later turned a witness/complainant in the case before Gurmeet, had moved court saying his identity and that of other men castrated at the ashram be protected.
