An advocate has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking structural safety assessment of all the construction sites of various lines of Mumbai Metro after the tragic accident took place in the city wherein one man lost his life and three were seriously injured after a portion of the slab of an under-construction of Metro Line 4B fell on an autorickshaw and a private car.
Notably, on February 14, the part of the parapet fell directly on a moving autorickshaw and a car due to which, the passenger in the auto - Ramdhan Yadav, a farmer and a Sarpanch of Rambhartani village in Uttar Pradesh, died on the spot while the rickshaw driver, and the cab driver sustained serious injuries.
The petition filed by advocate Ruju Thakker seeks a direction from the court to conduct third party safety audit of all the Metro Line under construction sites across Mumbai. The plea further seeks a direction to the authorities to submit a detailed report on cause of the accident that occured on February 14, 2026.
Further, a directive is sought against the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to spell out why it has not yet initiated blacklisting proceedings against the contractor despite such a horrific accident that has claimed a life.
Thakker has also sought details of compensation awarded to the family members of the deceased Yadav and also to the injured persons.
As an interim prayer, the PIL seeks a directive to immediately halt the work at LBS Marg, Mulund, where the accident took place and conduct a structural safety assessment and place its report before the court.
According to Thakker, she and most of her relatives live in and around Mulund area in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai and therefore, she and her family is scared after the incident to travel from the road under the Metro bridge, i.e. the LBS Road, where the accident took place. She has pointed out that this very road is a major connecting road to Ghatkopar, Thane etc.
The matter is likely to be heard by a division bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad in due course.
