The Bombay High Court on Monday (September 21) took suo motu cognisance of the issue of noise pollution caused particularly during religious processions in Mumbai and other cities across Maharashtra.

A division bench of Justice Girish Kulkarni and Justice Dr Neela Gokhale has ordered the Maharashtra Government to spell out what steps it has taken particularly for containing Noise Pollution caused due to DJs during the religious processions.

The bench noted that during the ongoing Ganesh Chaturthi festival, DJs have been playing even beyond midnight, causing noise pollution to residents.

The bench therefore, ordered Maharashtra Advocate General Dr Milind Sathe to furnish details of steps taken to contain noise pollution during religious processions.

"Let us know what are the statutory laws in place and how much compliance have you done," the bench ordered.

The judges have asked AG Sathe to furnish details of the same by Tuesday afternoon.

Notably, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on a similar issue is already pending before the High Court division bench led by Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi.
