The Calcutta High Court on Monday (October 12) directed the Kolkata Police Commissioner to ensure adequate protection for Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh and prevent any further mob attack on him before his plea is taken up by the appropriate Division Bench.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya passed the direction while hearing Ghosh's plea concerning an alleged attack on him and damage to his car on September 27.
Appearing for Ghosh, his counsel submitted that the MLA had earlier been provided Y-category security, but had faced repeated attacks after the level of protection was reduced. The alleged incidents took place on June 15, September 25 and September 27.
Additional Advocate General Bilwadal Bhattacharyya submitted that Ghosh was being provided protection by the Special Branch.
Questioning how the incident could have occurred despite the security arrangement, Justice Bhattacharyya asked, “In spite of this, how did the incident take place on Sept 26 and 27?”
The Court directed the Kolkata Police Commissioner to ensure that no further mob attack took place against Ghosh until the Division Bench heard the matter.
However, the Single Judge did not order any additional security for the MLA. The Court indicated that the matter would be heard by the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge and Justice Om Narayan Rai.
The Division Bench had earlier directed the Registry to compile matters concerning incidents of egg-pelting.
