The Calcutta High Court has declined to urgently hear a plea filed by Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee seeking restraint on media reporting concerning investigations and cases against him, alleging that the dissemination of investigation-related information has led to a media trial.

When the matter was mentioned before Justice Saugata Bhattacharya, the bench stated that it would not be possible to hear the matter before the Puja vacations, and thus the matter would be placed in the montly-list of December 2026.

Banerjee's plea alleges that details relating to the investigation, including interrogation and other investigative steps, were being leaked to media organisations, thereby affecting his reputation and his right to a fair investigation.

The matter was earlier mentioned before a single-judge bench of Justice Krishna Rao on October 8. The Court declined to entertain the plea, holding that the matter should be placed before the appropriate bench having jurisdiction over issues concerning police action.

Banerjee's counsel had submitted that investigating agencies could not disclose details of an ongoing investigation to the media and sought directions to prevent the dissemination of information that could prejudice the investigation and affect his reputation.

The Court granted Banerjee liberty to approach the appropriate bench.
