The Calcutta High Court on Monday directed the West Bengal Police to furnish details of all FIRs registered against Sumit Roy, Personal Secretary of Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, while directing that his plea be taken up on September 10.

Justice Saugata Bhattacharya directed the Police to submit a written report indicating the total number of FIRs registered against Roy.

Roy has approached the High Court challenging FIRs registered against him in connection with allegations relating to recruitment irregularities and a land-related case. He is also facing four other FIRs registered at different police stations in West Bengal, for which he had earlier sought an urgent hearing.

During Monday's proceedings, Roy's counsel, Senior Advocate Vikas Pahwa, submitted that several more FIRs had been registered against his client and claimed that FIRs were being lodged against him almost every day.

The counsel further submitted that Roy had been cooperating with the investigation and had appeared before the investigating agency on eight occasions.

The High Court had earlier granted Roy protection from coercive action in connection with the recruitment-related case. However, his plea for similar protection in the land-related case was rejected.

Roy thereafter approached the Supreme Court against the High Court's order and has secured interim protection from the apex court. The Supreme Court is expected to take up the matter on August 31.

The present proceedings also concern four FIRs which, according to Roy's counsel, are separate from the two cases in which he has already obtained protection from the High Court and Supreme Court.

Earlier this month, the High Court had declined to grant an urgent hearing on Roy's plea seeking quashing of these four FIRs and interim protection against coercive action. His counsel had then submitted that the four FIRs were unrelated to the two cases in which Roy had already secured protection.

On Monday, the Court deferred the matter to September 10. It also indicated that no coercive action should be taken against Roy in the meantime, while permitting him to approach the Court if the police take any action against him.

The direction came as the Court sought a comprehensive picture of the criminal cases registered against Roy before proceeding further with his challenge.
