The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday revoked the interim protection from arrest earlier granted to Trinamool Congress leader Jahangir Khan in connection with multiple FIRs registered against him ahead of the Falta Assembly re-poll.

A vacation bench of Justice Partha Sarathi Sen refused to extend the interim protection which had been granted by Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya till May 26.

The Court observed that merely alleging political vendetta or citing a change in the political scenario in the State could not justify continued protection from coercive action. According to reports, seven FIRs have been registered against Khan at Falta Police Station in South 24 Parganas.

Khan had earlier approached the High Court apprehending arrest and seeking disclosure of all FIRs lodged against him. While granting interim relief on May 18, the Court had observed that democratic participation ought to be protected and directed that no coercive steps be taken against him till May 26, subject to his cooperation with the investigation.

The interim protection was granted in the backdrop of the May 21 Falta re-poll, where Khan had initially contested as the Trinamool Congress candidate. However, he later withdrew from the electoral contest days before polling.

Opposing the plea for extension of protection, the State submitted before the Court that the earlier relief had been granted only to enable Khan to participate in the re-poll process and that the purpose of the order no longer survived after conclusion of the election.
