Delhi High Court Asks Traffic Committee To Consider Representation For 24x7 Operation Of Traffic Lights

The Delhi High Court has asked the city's traffic committee to consider a representation for 24X7 operation of traffic lights across Delhi, especially in smaller colonies, keeping in mind the increase in late-night delivery personnel and road-safety concerns arising when signals are placed on blinker mode.A division bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela thus disposed of a PIL, permitting the Petitioner to make an exhaustive representation to the said Committee which may contain all averments and documents on which the petitioner intends to rely.“Once any such representation is made, the Committee as aforesaid shall take up the issues and take appropriate decisions and actions, which may be warranted, to redress the grievances raised in the Public Interest Litigation Petition,” it ordered.The Petitioner sought directions to ensure that traffic signals in the city at various points continue to function round the clock. He also sought a technical audit in relation to non-functioning of the traffic signals and a uniform record keeping mechanism for maintaining the traffic signal operations across the national capital.Responding to the PIL, the Central government submitted that for addressing such issues, a Committee has been formed headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Technical), Delhi Police and overall supervision of traffic issues is entrusted to the Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Delhi Police, where the petitioner can raise his grievances.As such, the Court directed the Committee to decide the representation within two months.Appearance: Mr. Ashish Taneja, Advocate alongwith petitioner; Mr. Rohan Jaitley, CGSC with Mr. Dev Pratap Shahi, Mr. Varun Pratap, Ms. Yogya Bhatia, Advocates for UOI.
