The Delhi High Court has restrained 26 websites from illegally streaming live matches of the ongoing 'Serie A Championship', after finding that they were broadcasting the content without authorization from DAZN Limited which is the exclusive rights holder of the sporting event.

Justice Tejas Karia passed the order on November 6, 2025, in a suit filed by DAZN Limited seeking urgent protection of their exclusive broadcast and digital streaming rights.

DAZN Limited holds exclusive global media rights including television and digital rights for broadcasting and streaming the Serie A Championship under a licencing agreement.

The company informed the Court that several websites were illegally streaming DAZN's live matches and making them available to the public without permission. It alleged that these platforms were actively reproducing and communicating DAZN's broadcast content, causing financial loss and diluting the value of its rights.

After examining the evidence, the Court observed that DAZN had made a prima facie case for interim protection. The Court noted that the unauthorized dissemination of live sports broadcasts could cause irreparable harm to DAZN's revenue streams and undermine the significant financial investment made to acquire exclusive rights.

The issue of rogue websites engaging in the piracy of copyrighted content presents a recurring threat and disseminating or communicating any portions of the Event, without proper authorization or licensing from the Plaintiffs, would violate the Plaintiffs' Exclusive Rights.”, the Court said.

The Court referred to its earlier ruling in Universal City Studios LLC v. Dotmovies.baby where a 'Dynamic+ injunction' was issued to protect copyrighted works including future broadcasts, from being uploaded on rogue websites and to prevent violation of rights under Section 37 of the Copyright Act, 1957. Following the same reasoning, the Court found that a similar approach was warranted in this case to prevent repeated infringement during live matches.

Consequently, the Court restrained 26 identified websites from hosting, streaming, rebroadcasting or otherwise communicating any part of the Serie A Championship without authorization from DAZN.

The Court also directed that if any new websites are found illegally streaming the Championship during or before the event, DAZN can immediately share their details with the concerned domain registrars and internet service providers for real-time blocking without delay.

DAZN was further asked to regularly submit affidavits listing any newly identified infringing websites so that the Court remains informed and the order will automatically extend to all newly discovered infringing sites once they are added to the case.

The matter will be next listed on February 27, 2026.
