The Delhi High Court on Monday (May 18) granted interim bail to jailed Baramulla MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh in a terror funding case registered by the National Investigation Agency, following the demise of his father.
A division bench of Justice Prathiba M. Singh and Justice Madhu Jain passed the order after noting that Rashid's father passed away at AIIMS, New Delhi, in the intervening night of May 17 and 18.
“The Court has heard the parties and perused the records. Accordingly, due to the demise of the Appellant's father, interim bail is granted to the Appellant until 2nd June, 2026,” the bench ordered.
The Court was hearing an application moved by Rashid seeking interim bail to conduct burial rites and other customary ceremonies after the death of his father.
Rashid, who was elected as a Member of Parliament from Baramulla constituency in 2024, is accused in the UAPA case.
The plea stated that various religious and customary rituals were required to be performed between May 18 and June 1, including funeral prayers, burial, mourning ceremonies, recitation of Quran and observance of Eid-ul-Adha following the demise.
The counsel appearing for NIA informed the Court that the factum of death had been verified.
While granting interim bail, the Court directed that Rashid would remain accompanied by at least two plain-clothed police officials throughout the bail period.
He is permitted to stay only at his Srinagar and Kupwara residences and visit burial grounds or places of worship solely for customary rites.
The bench further directed that any meeting with persons other than immediate family members must take place only in the presence of police officials.
Rashid has also been restrained from contacting witnesses, engaging in unlawful activity or leaving the country without prior permission.
