The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed social media platform Twitter to provide basic subscriber information and other relevant details of five accounts indulging in leaking clips related to the upcoming movie Jawan.

The film starring Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan is set to be released on June 02.

Justice C Hari Shankar disposed of the application moved by Red Chillies Entertainments Private Limited in its suit filed against various rogue websites and other social media platforms seeking to restrain them from committing any infringement in relation to its copyright in the film.

During the hearing today, the counsel appearing for the entertainment company submitted that the fresh application was filed in view of certain additional leaks committed by the Twitter accounts in question.

The counsel submitted that the nature of the leaks suggested that the persons running the Twitter accounts had “accessed systems” of the plaintiff company.

The application thus sought a direction on Twitter to disclose the basic subscriber information and other details including IP addresses, usernames, phone numbers in respect of the five twitter accounts.

Disposing of the application, the court ordered: “Thus court directs the defendant no. 2 (Twitter) to provide information of five accounts by way of an affidavit as an additional document with advanced copy to the counsel of the plaintiff so that the plaintiff can take appropriate action.”

    About the Suit

It was the case of the entertainment company that the defendants were indulging in broadcasting certain clips and stills from the film which are available on the internet even though no licence to broadcast or transmit them has, till date, been granted to them.

Issuing summons in the suit, Justice Shankar had directed Twitter, YouTube, Google and Reddit to immediately block and take down all the infringing contents and the clips referred to by Red Chillies Entertainment in the plaint.

It added that the entertainment company would be at liberty to immediately inform the internet service providers in case similar content is uploaded on the internet who would then promptly take down or block access to the same.
