Expedite Police Protection Request Of Ex DUSU President Ronak Khatri Over Extortion Threat: High Court To Delhi Police

The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Delhi Police to expedite the request made by Ronak Khatri, former President of Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU), for police protection over allegations of extortion threat by Rohit Godara gang. Justice Ravinder Dudeja in the interim, directed that a beat constable shall visit Khatri every day for the next two weeks atleast once to ensure his well being.It was Khatri's case that on September 29, he received threat messages from a Ukraine registered phone number, wherein an individual claiming to be in Rohit Godara, demanded Rs 5 crores from him. Khatri's plea was filed through Advocates Obhirup Ghosh, Nishant Khatri, Tejaswini and Shaurya Vikram. The petition claimed that Khatri, in the messages, was threatened that if the amount was not paid, he would be shot.During the hearing today, Sanjay Lao, standing counsel for the Delhi Police, informed Court that Khatri's application for security has been forwarded to the DCP Special Cell, who would have to assess the threat perception and take a call. “We can send a local beat constable who would go everyday to his house to assess threat,” he said. Lao added that in the meanwhile, Khatri's application for police protection will be forwarded to DCP Outer North who shall forward the same to DCP Special Cell. “The Special Cell shall assess threat perception and take a decision to provide security to the petitioner,” the Court recorded Lao's submission. Disposing of the plea, the Court said it is the duty of the State to protect the life of all the citizens of the country. This Court being the Constitutional Court is expected to further the constitutional protection of the citizens, it added. Noting that since Khatri perceives threat to his life, it directed the DCP Outer North as well as the DCP Special Cell to expedite the request made by Khatri for police protection. “In the meanwhile, the beat constable and the SHO shall be duly counselled to attend to the immediate call, if any, made by the petitioner. The beat constable shall visit the petitioner every day, atleast once for the next two weeks to ensure his well being. The petition is disposed of,” the Court said.Title: Ronak Khatri v.
