The Delhi High Court has directed the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to decide, within two weeks, the show-cause notices issued to wrestler Vinesh Phogat.

Justice Amit Mahajan observed that the uncertainty surrounding the disciplinary proceedings could affect a sportsperson's mental preparedness ahead of competitive events.

The Court said that a sportsperson needs to be in a fit and relaxed state of mind to participate in competitive events so that their performance is not compromised.

The Court passed the order while hearing a petition filed by Phogat challenging two show-cause notices issued by the WFI on May 09 and June 17.

Phogat apprehended that the WFI might pass an adverse decision against her just before the commencement of upcoming tournaments, leaving her with no adequate opportunity to approach the Court for relief.

Her counsel, Senior Advocate Rajshekhar Rao, submitted that the national tournament in which Phogat intends to participate is scheduled to be held around the middle of December 2026. He further submitted that she needs to make preparations for the tournament and that the pending show-cause notices were hanging over her like a sword.

Taking note of the apprehension, the Court observed that the predicament expressed by Phogat appeared to be genuine.

The Court directed the authorities to take a decision on the impugned show-cause notices within two weeks.

It further clarified that if a decision is taken after the expiry of two weeks, the same shall remain in abeyance until the next date of hearing.

The Court issued notice to the authorities and directed them to file their replies, if any, before the next hearing.

The matter has been listed for further hearing on January 20, 2027.
