    The Central Government on Thursday appointed Justice Lanusungkum Jamir as the Acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

    The said appointment of the Justice Jamir came after the elevation of the Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta as a Judge of the Supreme Court.

    “In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint, Shri Justice Lanusungkum Jamir, Judge of the Gauhati High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from the date Shri Justice Sandeep Mehta relinquishes the charge as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court consequent upon his appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India,” the notification states.

    Justice Jamir obtained LLB degree in the year 1988 from the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). He enrolled in the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura in the year 1989.

    He was elevated to the bench as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on May 22, 2013 and took oath as Additional Judge, Manipur High Court on October 9, 2018, on transfer and became permanent on November 12, 2018. Justice Jamir took oath as Judge of the Gauhati High Court on June 10, 2022.
