The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday (June 17) said it will hear on June 22 a plea by St. Xavier's College, a minority institution affiliated with Gujarat University, challenging state government's decision directing it to grant admissions only through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) system for undergraduate courses.
Justice Nikhil Kariel listed the matter for hearing on Monday, after the petitioner's counsel submitted that the senior counsel appearing in the matter was on his legs in another court.
GCAS, operated by State Government's Higher Education Department, is an online admission platform developed for facilitating admissions to undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and research programs offered by participating universities and affiliated colleges across Gujarat.
In the previous hearing on June 11, a coordinate bench of Justice Niral R Mehta had recused from hearing the case. Notice was issued earlier this month by a vacation bench.
Reportedly, first round of admissions under GCAS have been completed for colleges affiliated with Gujarat University. As per reports, St Xaviers College proceeded with a separate admissions process, asking students to register online directly.
Later the College, in a public notice dated June 9 on its website, has said that in view of pending proceedings before the high court, and only to avoid any confusion amongst students, the College shall presently not display / upload the merit list / merit position on its website.
The college said that the merit list / merit position shall be uploaded / updated after the matter is considered by the High Court on 11.06.2026 and/or subject to further notice by the College.
It has said that no further admission steps, including document verification, fee payment, seat allotment or final confirmation of admission, shall be undertaken until then.
