The Karnataka High Court in an interim order on Friday (January 23) stayed probe against the driver of a Lamborghini car accused of reckless driving and for retrofitting the silencer due to which the vehicle was stated to be "roaring" beyond the permissible decible limit.
As per various news report, a video of the car in question being driven in Bengaluru was circulated widely on social media, pursuant to which a suo motu case was stated to be registered.
The counsel for the petitioner submitted that he had already paid a fine of Rs. 8,500 and also produced receipts showing that the retrofitted silencer has also been changed. The court also during the hearing orally indicated that it will ask the petitioner to do "community service".
Issuing notice to the State, Justice M Nagaprasanna in his order dictated:
"The petitioner who drove a car/Lamborghini has landed himself in soup, for the reason that vehicle was roaring beyong the permitted decible levels. Therefore fine was imposed for silencer which was retrofitted, which would be beyond the original equipment. Therefore the fine is paid by petitioner for the roar of the car. It did not stop there. The petitioner is said to have driven the vehicle in a reckless manner on December 14, 2025 and December 19, 2025 which was captured and circulated on social media. Therefore despite the fine being taken for the aforesaid offences under provisions of Motor Vehicle Act the Crime is registered on the score that the petitioner has not changed the retrofitted silencer. The counsel submits that retrofitted silencer is also now changed and there is no roaring of the vehicle anymore. In light of the said document I deem it appropriate to stall further investigation in the case at hand, while appropriate orders would be passed at the time of closure of the proceedings in the event it is in favour of the petitioner".
During the hearing the counsel for the petitioner submitted that there was no accident adding, "On December 14, 2025 a series of vehicles travel from Mysore to Coorg on an expedition organized by the Lamborghini showroom in Bengaluru. 13 vehicles go. Im one of the last vehicles lagging behind. I drive according to prosecution a little fast".
To this the court said, "Little fast? Lamborghini beginning speed is 200...". To this the counsel said that in Bengaluru traffic it is impossible to drive at that speed.
He thereafter said that a Suo Motu FIR was registered, on the basis of a complaint by a traffic sub inspector based on information that he saw on X Corp (platform).
"For having driven that way I have paid fine of Rs 8,500," the counsel. At this stage the court orally said that it will ask the driver to do community service, to which the counsel said that they were "willing" to do the same.
The petitioner's counsel referred to the documents to submit that he had paid fine for retrofitted silencer and as on date there was no such retrofitted silencer.
"We will direct him community service," the court said to which the counsel said, "We will do it".
The matter is listed on February 6.
