The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday (November 3) said that it has initiated contempt proceedings against certain persons allegedly including lawyers who are stated to have entered a court room and "caused a ruckus".

During the hearing of a matter, a division bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice KS Hemlekha orally said:

"We have already issued a contempt notice. People are being identified from CCTV. This is not a behaviour that we will accept. You are aware of the Supreme Court's order...illegality by office bearers of different associations who are facing contempt in Supreme Court because of strikes there...we have no option but to initiate these proceedings".

As the court said this, a lawyer present in the courtroom submitted his apology.

To this the court orally said, "You are the person? Give an affidavit of apology. What kind of behaviour is this? Are you an advocate? You are an officer of the court. You cannot simply throw your responsibilities away and behave like this. Absolutely unbecoming of an advocate".

The court further said it will not only issue contempt but will also refer the matter to the Bar Council, adding that there was no reason for the person to be an advocate at all.

Meanwhile another counsel sought apology for the Advocates' Association Bangalore, adding that tomorrow all the office bearers of the association will be present before the court. "We will file an affidavit. Please exempt for today," the counsel said.

The court said that it had given a notice in the contempt proceedings adding, "You come and answer to this. This is contempt in face of the court". The court asked the Association to file a reply.

"Personally speaking, this is not the kind of behaviour...Specially after we had said that there will be no adverse orders passed. We told the Association. We had communicated. We understand that you are...," the court orally said.

The court said that a contempt case had been registered and the matter was listed on November 19.

"We have already issued directions to identify who have done this...to find out from CCTV about those persons. As far as this gentleman is concerned we have already issued notice to him. You can't behave like this. This is the matter which should be referred to the Bar Council. This is still the high court of the State. If you think anyone can barge in and start creating ruckus then consequences must follow," the court orally added.
