The Kerala High Court recently considered a public interest litigation filed by a resident of the western side of Kochi highlighting the acute shortage of drinking water in the area.
The PIL sought directions from the Court to the Chairman/Additional Secretary of Water Resources, the Chief Engineer as well as the Assistant Executive Engineer of the Kerala Water Authority to ensure proper supply of water to the people of West Kochi, Chellanam Panchayath, Kumbalangi Panchayath and 30 wards of the Kochi Municipal Corporation.
The petitioner has also prayed for the Court to direct the afore persons to install flow meters at all relevant water supply points to prevent diversion and ensure proper management of the water supply.
When the matter came up before the Bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Syam Kumar V.M., it granted two weeks' time to the respondents to file affidavits disclosing the steps taken to ensure supply of drinking water.
The Bench added:
"We hope and trust that in the meantime adequate measures will be taken to ensure that there is continuous supply of drinking water for the residents of the area mentioned in the writ petition."
The case is posted on February 19 next.
The petition is moved by Advocates Ajith George, P.T. Thajmina, C.S. Shahul Hameed, Dinurag M., Nitin Suseelan and P.L. Agnees.
