The Counsel for Lakshadweep Administration on Monday (23 February) informed the Kerala High Court that the order declaring 'No Vehicle Wednesday' will not be implemented till the end of Ramzan.
The submissions were made before Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas while considering the plea challenging the order of the Lakshadweep Administration declaring every Wednesday as a “No Vehicle Day” across the Union Territory.
The administration has passed the impugned order as a measure to promote public health by encouraging walking and cycling and to reduce vehicular emissions in the islands.
The petitioner has raised multiple issues in the plea including the practical concerns regarding the passengers arriving by ships and flights on Wednesdays and also the transportation of essential goods by ships and speed vessels.
The Court has issued notice to the respondents and directed the standing counsel to get instructions on the matter.
The matter is posted on 16 March for further consideration.
