    Justice SV Gangapurwala was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court on Sunday. Governor of Tamil Nadu, Dr RN Ravi administered administered the oath of office at Raj Bhavan in Chennai.     Justice SV Gangapurwala was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court on Sunday. Governor of Tamil Nadu, Dr RN Ravi administered administered the oath of office at Raj Bhavan in Chennai. 

    The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the appointment of Justice Gangapurwala to the Madras High Court on April 19. The Centre had notified his appointment on May 26.

    Justice Gangapurwala was elevated as Additional Judge of Bombay High Court in 2010. In December 2022, he was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

    With his appointment, the High Court will have a Chief Justice after almost eight months. The last Chief Justice was Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari who attained superannuation in September last year.

    Following this, Justice Duraiswamy, who was the senior most judge of the court was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice. However, his tenure was short as he attained superannuation on September 22, 2022.

    After Justice Duraiswamy, Justice T Raja was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice and he went on to hold the office till May 24 when he attained superannuation. After his retirement, Justice S Vaidyanathan was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice.
