Madras High Court Asks Parties To File Their Objections To Medical Board's Report On Savukku Shankar's Heath

The Madras High Court has called for objections to the report filed by the Medical Board which assessed the health condition of YouTuber-Journalist Shankar @ Savukku Shankar. The bench of Justice P Velmurugan and Justice M Jothiraman directed the Additional Public Prosecutor and the counsel representing Shankar's mother Kamala to file their response/objection to the Medical Board's report. It may be noted that while disposing of an application filed by the police seeking to cancel Shankar's interim bail, the bench had directed the Dean of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital to constitute a Medical Board to assess Shankar's medical condition. Following court direction, the Board was constituted. When the matter was taken up, the court was informed that Shankar had appeared before the Medical Board and the report based on the assessment was filed in a sealed cover. The court then directed the counsel to go through the medical board's report and file their submissions or objections. The court also admitted an impleading petition filed by Shankar and a review petition seeking to review the conditions imposed on him. Shankar was arrested on 13th December in connection with an offence under Sections 296(b), 353(lxc), 308(5), 61(2) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. It was alleged that Shankar had extorted money from a film producer.Following his arrest, Shankar's mother Kamala had approached the High Court seeking his medical treatment. A habeas corpus plea was also filed to forbear the police authorities from isolating Shankar from other prisoners.On December 26, 2025, a vacation bench of the Madras High Court granted interim bail to Shankar for a period of 3 months. The court had noted that Shankar had serious health issues and needed treatment. The court had also noted that the authorities had been filing cases against Shankar, curtailing his personal liberty.In January, the Inspector of Police, Saidapet Police Station approached the court seeking to cancel the interim bail alleging that he was misusing the liberty granted by the court. While criticising the manner in which Shankar had conducted himself after getting interim bail, considering his health condition, the court was not inclined to cancel his interim bail. The court through imposed more conditions on Shankar, restricting his movement for health or legal assistance. Though a Special Leave Petition was filed against this order, the Supreme Court refused to interfere.Case Title: A Kamala v. Inspector of Police Case No: WP Crl. 1791/2025
