    Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh, senior-most puisne Judge of the Patna High Court, on Wednesday, took oath as the 34th Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. Raghubar Das, Governor of Odisha administered him the oath of office.

    His name was recommended for the post by the Collegium of the Supreme Court on November 2, 2023. The Centre notified his appointment last week.

    While recommending his name, the Collegium had taken into consideration the fact that the Patna High Court currently has no representation among the Chief Justices of the High Courts. Further it had remarked,

    “As regards his contribution to the judiciary by way of disposal of cases, during his tenure of more than 11 years as a Judge of High Court, he authored 1246 reported judgments, of which 562 were delivered during last 5 years. He has maintained high standard of professional ethics at the Bar and Bench and enjoys good reputation for conduct and integrity.”

    Justice Singh was enrolled as an Advocate on 30.10.1990 after obtaining his LLB degree from the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi. He was appointed as an Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government in the year 1998. He also acted as an empanelled counsel for the administrative side of the Patna High Court.

    Later he was appointed as a 'panel counsel' by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India for conducting cases on behalf of Accountant General Office in the Patna High Court. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in the year 2010 and also served as Additional Advocate General, Government of Bihar from December 2010 till his elevation as an Additional Judge of the Patna High Court on 05.04.2012.

    He officiated as the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court for a brief period from 06.02.2023 after the elevation of the then Chief Justice Sanjay Karol to the Supreme Court.

    After the superannuation of the former Chief Justice Subhasis Talapatra, the Orissa High Court was helmed by Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, who was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice.
