Rajasthan High Court Reviews Jodhpur Cleanliness Drive, Civic Chief Assures Disciplinary Action Against Erring Officials

The Rajasthan government last week placed before the High Court a comprehensive report detailing the measures undertaken by it to improve sanitization across Jodhpur, including establishment of dedicated monitoring cell under the command of monitoring officers to observe deployment of entire workforce and actual work on the ground level.This came during a Public Interest Litigation hearing before the division bench of Justice Vinit Kumar Mathur and Justice Bipin Gupta, filed in relation to the sanitation in the city of Jodhpur. During previous hearing, the State was directed to submit an affidavit detailing the action plan for sanitization and removal of debris and garbage from the streets/parks in the city of Jodhpur. While complying with the order, the State submitted that different scavenging gangs were deployed in Jodhpur for improving the scavenging and sanitization, and also strengthening garbage removal and transportation. Furthermore, it was submitted that the roads were divided into different zones and different gangs were entrusted with the duties of sanitization therein. In continuation of the compliance report, the State further informed that a number of auto trippers and other machines were deployed for door-to-door garbage collection and transportation. Further, waste transit stations and garbage collection centers were also earmarked for accumulation of garbage and thereafter transferring them to the dumping yard. “The compliance report also stated that all possible efforts are being made for mitigating the public health risks and for ensuring the environmental safeguard in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Guidelines issued by the competent authorities so as to effectively deal with the situation in the city of Jodhpur”. Furthermore, the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Jodhpur submitted that they were in the process of constituting ward committees in Jodhpur to closely monitor the sanitation and scavenging work in each ward. All possible and necessary steps shall be undertaken to make Jodhpur clean, hassle-free and reducing public health risk due to dirt and garbage. It was also submitted that disciplinary action shall be taken against all the erring officials, who were found to be not performing their duties seriously, and violating the orders passed by the authority. In this background, the counsel sought more time to put on record the latest compliance report. Accordingly, the matter has been listed on December 11, 2025.
