Sikkim High Court Holds Full Court Reference To Condole Demise Of Former Acting Chief Justice Malay Sengupta

The Sikkim High Court held a Full Court Reference to condole the demise of Justice Malay Sengupta, former Acting Chief Justice of the High Court.Justice Malay Sengupta, who served as a Judge to both Calcutta and Sikkim High Courts, had passed away on September 05.Before his elevation as High Court Judge in 1995, he held important positions of Senior Law Officer, Metro Railway, Kolkata (formerly Calcutta); Judicial Secretary (Andaman & Nicobar Administration); District & Sessions Judge in different stations; and as an officer in the Registry of the Calcutta High Court.After a short stint as Calcutta High Court Judge, he was transferred to Sikkim High Court and joined as Judge on October 16, 1995.Justice Sengupta was born on 10th November, 1936 at Jamalpur and he completed his LL.B and LL.M from the Calcutta University.A jurist par excellence he rendered judgments in many matters of public importance during his illustrious career as a High Court Judge. He demitted office on November 09, 1998. His passion for law, legal education and public service can also be gauged from the fact that after demitting office he contributed to the legal education by donning the role of a Visiting Professor of the prestigious Calcutta University Law College, Hajra campus and the National University of Juridicial Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata. He also continued to render public service as the Chairperson of Other Backward Classes (OBC) Commission, West Bengal; Rajnoitik Bandi Mukti Commission, West Bengal; and the Police Commission, Sikkim. He was also at the helm of different prominent organizations such as the Legal Aid Services, West Bengal (LASWEB), Committee for Protection of Democratic Rights (CPDR) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).Senior Advocates Mr. A. Moulik and Mr. Karma Thinlay Namgyal made their references from the Bar during the Full Court proceedings held on Sep. 9 condoling the demise of Justice Sengupta and paying homage to the departed soul. Chief Justice Biswanath Somadder also made His Lordship's reference, followed by a minute's silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul. The members of the bereaved family also attended the Full Court reference through video-conferencing.
