The Telangana High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the death of a eight-year-old school girl in a road accident in Bachupally last week and issued notice to the State and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe took up the matter on Tuesday and listed it for hearing on August 29. Nizampet Municipal Corporation, Station House Officer Bachupally and others are also respondents in the case.

The suo motu cognizance was taken on the basis of a report carried by Times Of India in its Hyderabad City Edition. According to the daily, the class II student, who was riding pillion, came under the rear wheels of the bus and died on the spot. Her father, who was riding the two-wheeler, was also injured in the accident.

Quoting from the news report, the court, while taking suo motu cognisance of the accident, noted that the victim's father was trying to manoeuvre his way around a pothole when a speeding school bus rammed into the two-wheeler and both father and daughter fell on the right side of the road.

"It is further stated in the News Item that a pall of gloom hung over the residents of Nizampet and Bachupally over the news of an eight year old girl dying in a road accident. Residents, while finding fault with the bus driver whose alleged reckless driving ultimately took the child's life, questioned if the poor road conditions had a role to play in the accident," the court noted.
