The Jharkhand High Court has disposed of over 1,250 bail applications in a special drive during the last two days. Almost all courts here took up bail applications in large numbers and achieved a high disposal rate.

Secretary of High Court Bar Association Hemant Shikarwar had approached the HC Acting Chief Justice Justice DN Patel with the request to constitute special benches for bail in view of the long pendency of bail applications. The secretary requested that pending cases be cleared before the vacation for the coming festivals.

A total of 1,014 bail applications were listed in different courts, out of which 817 were disposed of on Wednesday. One bench headed by Justice Rangon Mukhopadhaya disposed of 140 out of the 149 listed bail applications in a single day. On Thursday, the HC courts disposed of 450 bail and anticipatory bail applications out of 505 listed ones. Justice Rangon Mukhopadhaya disposed of all the 107 applications listed in his court.

Shikarwar said the bail application were up to six months old. The pendency was mainly due to more filing than disposal of the applications. He said lawyers and the litigants, in general, were relieved that their petitions were decided.

Advocate-General of HC Ajit Kumar said the court will be closed for two weeks for Durga Puja and for the same period during Deepawali. The HC decided to take up bail matters before vacation so that persons who have merit in their pleas get appropriate relief.
