National Law University Odisha (NLUO), Cuttack has announced the launch of the first Kautilya Society–NLUO Double-Credit Course on Competition Law and Policy. The course will be conducted in virtual mode from 19 December 2025 to 31 January 2026.

NLUO, established under Act 4 of 2008 of the Odisha State Legislature, offers academic and research programmes in various branches of law. As part of its institutional initiatives, the University hosts several research centres and student societies that engage with contemporary legal and policy issues. The Kautilya Society is one such initiative aimed at promoting study and deliberation in public policy and its allied fields.

    Kautilya Society, NLUO

Kautilya Societies are student-led bodies set up in universities across India in collaboration with the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, with the objective of expanding exposure to legislative drafting, policy research, and public policy careers. The NLUO Chapter seeks to introduce students to opportunities in development, advocacy, consultancy, economics, campaigning, and related fields.

    About The Theme

In India, competition law serves as a cornerstone for ensuring efficiency, innovation, and consumer welfare. The Competition Act, 2002 marked a decisive shift from curbing monopolies to promoting fair and free markets, empowering the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to address anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominance, and combinations that distort market equilibrium.

Yet, as markets migrate online, competition law confronts a new frontier. Digital platforms driven by data, algorithms, and network effects blur traditional lines of market power and consumer harm. Questions arise: How should law respond to self-preferencing, gatekeeping, and data monopolies? Can regulation keep pace without stifling innovation?

This course aims to critically examine the evolution of Indian competition law within the broader context of a digitally integrated economy. It will trace the jurisprudential foundations of competition policy, analyse landmark CCI and Supreme Court interventions, international jurisprudence, and engage with emerging debates on digital competition, data regulation, and platform accountability. Through case studies and interactive sessions, participants will explore how law can sustain market fairness in an age where code and commerce increasingly converge.

    Objectives Of The Course

The following are the goals of this course:

    1. Familiarize students with the foundational concepts and contemporary relevance of competition law, enabling them to engage confidently with advanced coursework, research, and practical internship opportunities in the field.

    3. Develop analytical and critical reasoning skills to assess market structures, regulatory interventions, and policy debates in a globalized digital economy.

    4. Integrate theoretical knowledge with practical insights through interactive discussions, simulations, and research-based inquiry into contemporary competition law issues.
