Climate Change Can Be Addressed Through Indigenous Knowledge Systems: Chhattisgarh Minister At HNLU Conference

Chhattisgarh Minister for Tribal Affairs Shri Ram Vichar Netam emphasized the role of indigenous knowledge systems in addressing climate change and social inequality while delivering the keynote address at a two-day international conference on “Law, Rights, and Indigenous Futures” organized by Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU).
Addressing the conference, the Minister highlighted the need to recognize indigenous communities as active contributors to sustainable development. He stressed the importance of inclusive policies rooted in constitutional values of justice, equality, and dignity.
Prof. (Dr.) V. C. Vivekanandan, Vice-Chancellor, HNLU, in his opening remarks, underlined the relevance of tribal justice in contemporary legal discourse. He noted that the indigenous worldview, which aligns with nature, is increasingly being undermined by modern development models and called for concrete policy action.
The conference was organized by the Centre for Study of Law and Indigenous People under the leadership of Dr. Ayan Hazra. Dr. Deepak Srivastav, Registrar (In-Charge), welcomed the dignitaries, while Mr. Aashutosh Kumar Ahire served as the Convenor.
The conference featured participation from academicians, policymakers, legal practitioners, researchers, and students from across India and abroad. Technical sessions covered themes including indigenous rights, legal pluralism, climate justice, development and displacement, and gender issues within indigenous communities.
The valedictory session was addressed by Shri Sonmoni Borah, Principal Secretary, Department of Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste, Backward Classes and Minorities Development, Government of Chhattisgarh. He highlighted the role of governance and institutional collaboration in ensuring justice for indigenous communities.
Dr. Avinash Samal, Director, School of Law & Humanities, delivered the vote of thanks.
