  • HNLU:Round Table Discussion On The National Legal Services Day

    Commemorating the National Legal Services Day, Hidayatullah National Law University successfully organised a round table discussion on "Strengthening Legal Aid – Opportunities and Challenges" on the 9th November, 2022, and formally inaugurated the Pro-Bono Club headed by Dr.Balwinder Kaur in the august presence of dignitaries.

    Prof (Dr.) VC Vivekanandan, Vice Chancellor, HNLU in his opening remarks emphasized that legal aid is a fundamenatal right and not a charity. He also said the legal regime complex keeps a majority without access and there cannot be a Just society if the process depends on the economy which the individual possesses.

    Dr. Kaumudhi Challa, faculty coordinator of legal aid committee presented her views on the role of law students in promoting legal aid. She highlighted the various activities conducted by the legal aid committee of HNLU and quoted from the words of Robert Frost, the woods are lovely dark and deep but we have promises to keep and miles to go before we sleep.

    Smt. R. Sangeetha, IAS, Secretary, Department of Technical Education, Employment and Forest, Government of Chhattisgarh graced the occasion as the chief guest. She emphasised on the link between administration and law and the role of bureaucracy and interpretational skills in strengthening legal aid while sharing her experiences during the discussion. She made multiple suggestions for higher educational institutions for increasing the efficiency of legal aid initiatives.

    The Raipur Legal Services Authority was represented by Ms. Soumya Rai,Civil Judge,Chhattisgarh Judicial Services. She assured the University of future collaborations with authority to collectively strengthen access to Justice.

    Prof Dr. Uday Shankar,Registrar, HNLU discussed the significance of effective branding in making legal aid at institutions more fruitful. Other discussants also enlightened the audience with their diverse and outcome-oriented opinions.

    The event was organized under the supervision of the Legal Aid Committee and Pro Bono Club, HNLU, and the able guidance of Prof (Dr.) Yogendra K Srivastava, Dean, Outreach and Regulatory Affairs (External).
