The Law Commission of India, chaired by Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSoIPL), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, to collaborate on research, training and policy initiatives relating to legal reform.

The MoU was signed in New Delhi on October 22 in the presence of Justice Maheshwari, Law Commission Member Prof. D.P. Verma and Member Secretary Dr. Anju Rathi Rana.

Praveen Srivastava, Additional Secretary of the Law Commission, signed the agreement on behalf of the Commission, while Prof. Uday Shankar, Dean of RGSoIPL, represented the law school.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will jointly organise workshops, seminars and short-term training programmes and facilitate faculty exchanges. The collaboration will also involve applied research and the preparation of policy papers, particularly in the areas of legal studies, digital evidence and administrative studies.

The MoU further provides for joint publications, including books, monographs and manuals, with the objective of addressing gaps in existing research.

Additionally, RGSoIPL will undertake independent assessments and impact evaluations of training programmes and projects and provide expert inputs to assist the Law Commission in formulating its policies and schemes. Both institutions will also be able to utilise each other's infrastructure and resources for national and international collaborations, subject to third-party consent.

The law school stated that the agreement would provide its faculty members and students with opportunities to contribute to legal research and law reform in India. The MoU comes as IIT Kharagpur marks its 75th anniversary.
