    The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi, organised a two-day Capacity Building Training Programme for Law Officers of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) from July 16 to 17, 2026. The programme brought together 37 law officers from across the country for intensive deliberations on contemporary legal issues affecting corporate and commercial practice.

    The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. (Dr.) G. B. Reddy, Vice-Chancellor, NUALS, and inaugurated by Mr. Kamal Kumar Gwalani, Company Secretary & Executive Director (Law), Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Marketing Head Office, Mumbai. Mr. Rajeev Mohan, Executive Director (CA & Law), delivered the felicitation address, while Mr. Sanjai Padiyath, General Manager (Law), proposed the vote of thanks. Mr. Arun Kumar, Officer on Special Duty, NUALS, was also present.

    The programme addressed several emerging areas of commercial and corporate law. Sessions on the first day covered the Commercial Courts Act with emphasis on pleadings and evidence, the evolving framework of the Specific Relief Act following the 2018 amendments, the implications of the Jan Vishwas Act for the oil industry, and the MSME Act and its impact on commercial counterparties. The sessions were led by Adv. Dr. Thushara James, Mr. Pradeep M. Kulkarni, Prof. (Dr.) Jacob Joseph, and Adv. Aditya Venugopalan respectively.

    On the second day, Mr. Kamal Kumar Gwalani delivered a session on the role of in-house counsel in management decision-making through the theme "Boardroom Lawyering". This was followed by an expert panel discussion on title scrutiny of land featuring Adv. Mathews K. Uthuppachan, Mr. Sanjai Padiyath, Mr. Dhananjai Rai, and Mr. Pradeep M. Kulkarni.

    The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates by Dr. Lina Acca Mathew, Registrar, NUALS, recognising the successful completion of the training by all participating officers.
