O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) hosted the 3rd India–Japan Higher Education Forum 2026 in Tokyo on the theme "Shaping Universities of the Future in the Era of Human and Artificial Intelligence." The forum brought together university leaders, diplomats, policymakers, academics and students from India and Japan to deliberate on higher education, research collaboration, academic mobility, artificial intelligence, sustainability and education diplomacy.

Former Prime Minister of Japan Yukio Hatoyama delivered the special address and emphasised the long-standing civilisational ties between India and Japan. Referring to the Japanese philosophy of Yu-ai (fraternity) and Mahatma Gandhi's ideals of Ahimsa and Sarvodaya, he said the two countries could jointly promote a vision of harmony, human dignity and peaceful coexistence. He also expressed hope for greater academic exchanges between JGU and Japanese universities to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

JGU Founding Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar inaugurated the forum and reaffirmed the university's commitment to expanding academic collaboration with Japanese institutions. R. Madhu Sudan, Chargé d'Affaires at the Embassy of India in Tokyo, addressed the gathering and welcomed the forum as a contribution to the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Tomohiko Taniguchi, former Special Advisor to the Cabinet of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who spoke on the strategic importance of higher education, innovation and knowledge partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.

A distinguished public lecture was delivered by Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs. He highlighted the growing importance of higher education and people-to-people engagement in strengthening India–Japan relations and appreciated JGU's efforts to build sustained academic partnerships with Japanese universities.

During the event, JGU also launched its Sustainability Report 2026.

The forum featured a panel discussion chaired by Prof. Raj Kumar with the participation of senior academic leaders from the University of Tokyo, International Christian University, Musashi University, Sophia University, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Temple University Japan Campus, and Waseda University, among others. Discussions focused on the future of universities, internationalisation, artificial intelligence and cross-border academic collaboration.

The university also organised a certificate distribution ceremony for nearly 200 students who completed short-term study abroad programmes at partner universities in Japan during Summer 2026.

Speaking at the forum, Prof. Raj Kumar said universities must ensure that advances in artificial intelligence are guided by human values, ethical judgment and the public good. Prof. (Dr.) Akhil Bhardwaj, Executive Dean and Director, Office of International Affairs and Global Initiatives, said the forum reflects JGU's long-term commitment to strengthening academic partnerships, student mobility and institutional collaboration between India and Japan.
