RGNUL: Special Lecture On LGBTQI+ Identity And Hate Crimes [14th October 2022]

  • Centre for Criminology, Criminal Justice and Victimology, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab organised a special lecture on "Victims of Hate Crimes with specific reference to LGBTQI+ Community." Prof. G.S.Bajpai, Vice-Chancellor, RGNUL welcomed the resource person, Prof. Robert Peacock, Former President, World Society of Victimology and Academic Head of the Department of Criminology at the University of the Free State, South Africa. While addressing the participants Prof. G.S.Bajpai said, "The deliberations on LGBTQ+ can inform law, policy, influence criminal justice system and respond to the needs & experiences of LGBT offenders and victims."

    Prof. Peacock addressed the micro and macro aggression against vulnerable groups. Disrupting the pervasive rhetoric of bigotry and intolerance, Prof. Peacock discussed the gender expression and range of laws. He examined the problems in LGBT criminal justice system. "The criminalization of LGBT people left no room to think of the community as anything other than deviant sexual offenders," remarked Prof. Peacock. He added, "It took quite some time to decriminalize homosexuality. The opening up of this narrow space resulted in a paradigm shift." He also alluded to inequality and injustice suffered by victims – LGBT people, people living with HIV, undocumented LGBT. The lecture was attended by faculty and students of RGNUL.
