National Seminar On Renewable Energy, Sustainable Development And Consumer Protection At Rajiv Gandhi National University Of Law

Centre for Advanced Study in Energy Law (CASEL), Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab in collaboration with Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) NWRC Chandigarh organized on 30.03.2017 National Seminar on “Renewable Energy, Sustainable Development and Consumer Protection.” The dignitaries present during the inaugural session were Prof. Veer Singh, Former Director (Academic) Chandigarh Judicial Academy, Prof (Dr.) Nishtha Jaswal, Dept. of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Prof (Dr.) Paramjit S. Jaswal, Vice Chancellor, RGNUL and Prof. (Dr.) G.I.S Sandhu, Registrar, RGNUL.
In his welcome address, Prof. (Dr.) Paramjit S. Jaswal, Vice Chancellor, RGNUL laid emphasis on importance of sustainable growth. He elaborated upon the role of micro as well as macro organisms in the progression of life. Energy and Renewable Energy, he observed, must be harped on for sustainability. Prof. Paramjit S. Jaswal also focused on the role of law in protection of renewable energy resources.
Prof. (Dr.) Nishtha Jaswal delivered the keynote address during the inaugural session. She deliberated upon conservation of the flora and fauna for healthy environment and sustainable earth. Prof. Nishtha Jaswal focussed on the need to engage physical, social and psychological sciences and every discipline of knowledge for intellectual probing of the root causes of ecological degradation. In her discourse on renewable energy, Prof. (Dr.) Nishtha Jaswal highlighted on the role of national and international organisations and law in promoting bio-energy, wind power production and solar power generation for sustainable development. She talked about the role of Indian Government in promotion of renewable energy sources. Energy Self-Sufficiency and energy security, Prof. Nishtha Jaswal emphasized, was essential for the progress of the nation. She also referred to the Supreme Court verdict of Hindustan Zinc Ltd. V. Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission that mandated green power purchase and imposed renewable purchase obligation on consumer companies.
Prof. Veer Singh in his speech alluded to the insights of great thinkers like Rene Descartes, Confucius, Hegel, Immanuel Kant, G.B. Shaw and Mahatma Gandhi. He said that insights provided by these great men enable human beings to comprehend and analyse the root causes responsible for the diseased and degraded earth. He lauded the indigenous cultures which were more eco conscious than the modern man. Prof. Veer Singh also drew the attention of the seminarians and students on the uncontrollable climatic changes like uneven rainfall, soaring mercury in the month of March and the Melting of ice caps and glaciers. Implementation of laws, he remarked, was crucial for sustainability. Prof. Veer Singh dwelt upon the significance of social resistance and self-realization for a safe environment. He explained the three ways, viz, imitation, experimentation and contemplation, to achieve wisdom and self-realization. He exhorted the students and professionals to contemplate over the issues pertaining to sustainable development.
Prof. (Dr.) G.I.S Sandhu extended a vote of thanks on the occasion. During the technical sessions, academicians, research scholars and students from different institutes presented research paper on the themes of emerging global challenges in energy law, energy as challenge to sustainable development, natural resources, energy and climate change and multi-disciplinary concerns for energy sector and sustainable development. Dr. Geetika & Ms. Gurmanpreet Kaur, Assistant Prof. of Law, RGNUL coordinated the seminar.
