The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has announced that the 2nd National Lok Adalat of 2026, conducted across the country on May 9, facilitated the amicable settlement of 2,07,66,548 cases, including 1,87,63,883 pre-litigation matters and 20,02,665 pending cases, with an overall settlement amount of ₹3,440.81 crores.
The National Lok Adalat was organised under the aegis of NALSA and held under the leadership of Justice Surya Kant, Patron-in-Chief, NALSA, and Justice Vikram Nath, Executive Chairman, NALSA.
According to the tentative data received till 7:00 PM on May 9, the figures exclude seven States and two Union Territories where the National Lok Adalat is scheduled on later dates, as well as jurisdictions from which data is still awaited. NALSA stated that the comparatively lower figures, compared to certain previous National Lok Adalats, are primarily due to the staggered schedule in some States and Union Territories and the ongoing consolidation of data.
The National Lok Adalat was organised across 21 States and six Union Territories through thousands of benches constituted at courts, tribunals, consumer commissions and Permanent Lok Adalats.
NALSA further stated that, owing to summer vacations and administrative exigencies, the National Lok Adalat will be conducted on June 13, 2026, in Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal; on June 20, 2026, in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Telangana; and on July 11, 2026, in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka.
Ahead of the National Lok Adalat, Justice Vikram Nath highlighted the importance of Lok Adalats in the justice delivery system, observing that unresolved litigation has a “deleterious impact on livelihoods, destabilizes familial structure, and erodes public faith in the efficacy of legal structure.”
The Lok Adalat took up a wide range of matters including bank recovery cases, cheque dishonour disputes, motor accident claims, matrimonial disputes excluding divorce matters, labour disputes, consumer matters, compoundable criminal cases, traffic challans, service matters, land acquisition disputes, arbitration matters, plea bargaining, succession cases, revenue matters and public utility disputes.
Special emphasis was also placed on long-pending matters identified through the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), with NALSA reiterating its commitment towards reducing pendency and strengthening the justice delivery system.
NALSA stated that awards passed by Lok Adalats are final and binding and also provide the benefit of refund of court fees, ensuring speedy and cost-effective justice.
The authority further reiterated its commitment towards ensuring accessible and meaningful justice through free legal aid, legal awareness programmes, mediation and conciliation, victim compensation initiatives, legal services clinics and the work of Para Legal Volunteers across the country.
