    Prominent criminal trial lawyer Shrikant Shivade passed away at a private hospital in Mumbai earlier today. He had represented actor Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case before the trial court and several other celebrities.

    The 67-year-old was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago after his condition deteriorated, a lawyer who had assisted him on several cases said while speaking to Live Law. Shivade is survived by his mother, wife, daughter and son.

    The lawyer was a patient of leukaemia and had undergone a bone marrow transplant in November, 2021. After his condition deteriorated he was admitted to the hospital a couple of weeks ago.

    Shivade graduated from the Indian Law Society College in Pune and later taught the Indian Penal Code there for several years. He shot to fame when he represented the prime accused in the infamous Jalgaon sex scandal in 1994, where young girls were forced into prostitution.

    Shivade appeared for former INX Media founder Peter Mukerjea, accused in the murder of his stepdaughter Sheena Bora. In addition, he has represented Col Prasad Purohit, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon Blast Case, actor Shiney Ahuja in a rape case against him in 2009, and Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam - in the blackbuck killing case.

    In an MCOCA case regarding underworld funding of the film "Chori Chori Chupke Chupke," Shivade cross-examined several celebrities, including Sanjay Dutt. His other clients also included journalist Tarun Tejpal and diamond merchant Bharat Shah.
