The Bar Council of Delhi has addressed a letter to the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, seeking allotment of land for the purpose of setting up a housing society, exclusively for Advocates, practicing in the national capital.

The letter highlights that a large number of advocates in Delhi belong to the middle income group and cannot afford their own houses. They live in rented accommodations and do not have any facilities for recreational activities.

"The Bar Council of Delhi is of the firm view that the Delhi Govt. should provide sufficient land for housing society for advocates in Delhi, so that advocates also have their own house and live a dignified and peaceful life. Needless to say that this was an important commitment in your election manifesto also," the letter states.

    It adds,

"We, on behalf of Bar Council of Delhi, take this opportunity to request you to consider allotting 10 acres of land in Delhi at a place found suitable by your esteemed government, at subsidized rate, exclusively for the housing society for advocates' fraternity."

It is further requested that an appropriate bungalow in Lutyens Delhi may be allotted to the Bar Council for converting the same as recreational club for the lawyers, which shall be managed by the Council.

Previously, the Delhi Government had announced a scheme, with an annual budget of Rs. 50 crores, for providing medical and life insurance policies to the advocates.
