In a midnight hearing conducted last night, a Delhi court granted bail to Indian Youth Congress (IYC) President Uday Bhanu Chib who was arrested in relation to the shirtless protest at the recent India AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam.
Judicial Magistrate First Class Vanshika Mehta of Patiala House Courts noted that Chib appeared and participated in the investigation after notice was served upon him.
The judge said that the IO failed to put forth any cogent reason as to why further police custody of Chib was required, especially when his mobile was already in custody of the police.
“Being guilty or not is a matter of trial and law takes its own course to adjudicate such. however, what is relevant is whether the custody of the accused is required at this stage. The accused person is the National president of Indian Youth Congress, has strong roots in the society and hence, he is not a flight risk,” the Court said.
The judge emphasised that no person shall be devoid of the personal liberty on mere conjectures or primarily because the co accused persons are yet to be arrested.
The AI Impact Summit 2026 began on February 16. Various persons were arrested after the accused wore T-shirts bearing images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, with slogans against the government and the India-US trade deal.
Recently, the Court remanded three Youth Congress activists to three days of police custody after they were arrested from Himachal Pradesh.
