The Allahabad High Court has achieved a milestone in making judicial decisions accessible in Hindi, with 1,00,000 judgments translated into the language and made available free of cost on the Court's official website. Chief Justice Arun Bhansali uploaded the 1,00,000th translated judgment on October 5, 2026, in the presence of Justice Arindam Sinha, Justice Atul Sreedharan, Justice Siddharth Varma, Justice Ajit Kumar, Justice Sameer Jain and Justice Vikram D. Chauhan.
To commemorate the achievement, the AI-Assisted Legal Translation Advisory, e-AHCR and ILR Committee released a compendium titled “The Vernacular Voice of Justice”, documenting the journey of the SUVAS Cell from its first translated judgment to the one-lakh milestone.
The event was convened under the guidance of Justice Ajit Kumar, Chairman of the Committee. Justice Kumar expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice and the other judges present and acknowledged the work of the SUVAS Cell. The Chief Justice and other judges appreciated the initiative and encouraged the team involved in the translation work. Justice Vikram D. Chauhan proposed the vote of thanks.
The event was also attended by Manjeet Singh Sheoran, Registrar General; Dr. Anil Kumar Singh-II, Registrar (J) (Enquiry) and Presenting Officer of the Committee; Vivek Srivastava, Joint Registrar, SUVAS Cell; and Dr. Shabina Farooq, Deputy Registrar, ILR, along with other officers and members of the SUVAS Cell.
The initiative to translate judgments of Constitutional Courts into vernacular languages using technology gained momentum following the efforts of former Chief Justice of India Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud. He constituted the AI-Assisted Legal Translation Advisory Committee of the Supreme Court, chaired by Justice Abhay S. Oka, and wrote to the Chief Justices of all High Courts on January 23, 2023, requesting the constitution of similar committees to oversee machine-assisted translation activities.
The objective was to make Supreme Court and High Court judgments available in local languages, improve access to justice, increase public awareness and help young advocates access judgments in vernacular languages free of cost.
Pursuant to this initiative, the SUVAS Cell was established at the Allahabad High Court on August 16, 2023. The first High Court judgment translated into Hindi was uploaded on August 23, 2023.
On December 12, 2025, the Chief Justice uploaded the 50,000th translated judgment. Subsequently, it was decided to begin translating all final non-AFR orders and judgments running into three pages or more from March 17, 2026, on the eve of the Court's 160th anniversary of Establishment Day.
At present, the SUVAS Cells are translating all AFR judgments delivered by the Court, final non-AFR orders and judgments running into three pages or more, and Supreme Court judgments in cases arising from Uttar Pradesh and in cases arising from orders passed by the Bombay High Court and the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
The SUVAS Cell has also undertaken the translation of Supreme Court judgments and the publication of legal material in Hindi.
According to the figures released by the Court, 9,161 Supreme Court judgments were translated and furnished to the Supreme Court in a little over two and a half months by November 25, 2023. The Cell has also translated 363 Supreme Court judgments arising from Uttar Pradesh and reported in the Supreme Court Reports, 28 judgments arising from orders of the Bombay High Court and three judgments arising from orders of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
The Editorial Board of e-AHCR was established under the AI-Assisted Legal Translation Advisory, e-AHCR and ILR Committee to oversee publications, including e-books and e-booklets.
The quarterly e-book “Nyayabha – Nyay ki Kiran” was launched on Constitution Day, November 26, 2024. It features Hindi translations of articles, speeches, references and other non-judicial content contributed by judges, advocates, judicial officers, academicians, researchers, legal experts and students. Seven editions had been published by the end of September 2026.
The Court has also published six e-booklets containing Hindi translations of historical judgments. The series includes judgments relating to the Chauri Chaura Case, Keshav Singh Case, Agra Conspiracy Case, Cawnpore Bomb Blast Case, Raj Narayan v. Indira Nehru Gandhi and Just Right for Children Alliance & Anr. v. S. Har Harish & Ors. (POCSO case). These e-booklets are available free of cost on the Allahabad High Court's official website under the e-AHCR section.
