On Saturday, the Addl. District & Sessions Judge, Lucknow, Sanjay Shankar Pandey, allowed the bail application of activists Pawan Rao Ambedkar and Sadaf Jafar.

They were arrested for alleged involvement in anti-CAA protests taking place on 19 December at Parivartan Chowk, Lucknow. The said protests were termed illegal due to imposition of Section 144 CrPC in the city.

They had been booked for involvement in criminal conspiracy, sabotage, inciting violence and attempt to murder, under Sections 147, 148, 149, 152, 307, 323, 504, 506, 332, 353, 188, 435, 436, 120B and 427 of IPC, Sections 3 and 4 of Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984 and Section 7 of Criminal Law Amendment Act.

On December 23, the Court of Special Chief Judicial Magistrate had rejected their bail applications. Noting that there was no witness to testify a propos the specific role of the applicants during the violent protests in Lucknow, the Sessions court enlarged them on bail today. Vide separate orders, both of them have been asked to furnish a personal bond worth Rs. 50,000, in addition to two bonds of the same amount to be furnished before the Magistrate.

Allegedly, the December 19 protests caused many causalities and substantial loss to public and private property, including Govt. buses, media vans, motor bikes, etc.

While Ambedkar had claimed that he had been falsely implicated in the matter and that he had nothing to do with the alleged protests, the State had argued that he was involved in harming public property and assaulting police personnel, for which he was arrested from the spot.

Jafar was also arrested during the protests while she was in the process of recording a Facebook Live video. The video shows her asking the police about why she is being arrested despite not being complicit in the violence that ensued. Naheed, Zafar's sister has alleged that Zafar was brutally beaten with batons by male police and then taken for a medical examination before being sent to prison. U.P. Police has categorically denied the assault and have stated that they have enough proof of her involvement in the nefarious activities.
