Days After Attack On CJI, Shoe Hurled At Judicial Officer In Gujarat; State Judicial Service Association Condemns Incident

Just days after a shoe was hurled at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during the Supreme Court proceedings, a similar incident occurred in Gujarat on Tuesday, when a man threw a shoe at a judicial officer inside an Ahmedabad court. According to a PTI report, the incident took place in the courtroom of the City Civil and Sessions Court in Ahmedabad when proceedings were underway. The man, reportedly upset over the acquittal of four accused in a case, hurled his shoe at the presiding judge. Inspector PH Bhati of the Karanj police station told PTI, "The person got angry and threw a shoe at the judge after his appeal was dismissed". After the sudden disruption, the Court staff immediately caught the man, however, the presiding judge instructed not to take any action and let him go. The act follows closely on the heels of the October 6 incident in the Supreme Court, where a 71-year-old advocate threw a shoe at Chief Justice Gavai during court proceedings. The Bar Council of India later suspended the offending advocate's license with immediate effect. Gujarat Judicial Service Association Condemns Attack In response to this incident, the Gujarat Judicial Service Association (GJSA) issued a resolution on October 14, 2025, condemning the attack and calling for heightened protection of judicial officers and court infrastructure. The Association's resolution, signed by President SG Dodiya and Vice-President PI Prajapati, reads thus: "The Gujarat Judicial Service Association, Ahmedabad unequivocally condemns the reported attack / threat / vandalism against the Hon'ble Supreme Court & Hon'ble City Civil Court, Ahmedabad. Such acts constitute a direct assault on the independence, dignity, security and functioning of the judiciary". The resolution further stated that: "The rule of law, public confidence in the judicial system, and constitutional governance demand that courts operate free from fear, intimidation or violence. Any threats or attacks upon judicial officers, court premises, or their infrastructure undermine the very foundations of democracy and justice". Furthermore, calling for swift and firm action, the Association urged: "…all relevant authorities — the State Government, Home Department, Police, and Security Agencies — to ensure immediate and stringent security measures to protect judicial officers, court staff, and court buildings. Further, it demands that perpetrators be swiftly identified, prosecuted, and brought to justice under applicable laws". The Association also reaffirms its commitment to upholding the rule of law, due process, freedom of speech (in lawful limits) and institutional respect. “The Gujarat Judicial Service Association, Ahmedabad expresses solidarity with the judges, court staff, and members of the legal profession, and resolves to stand united against any assaults, threats, or intimidation directed at the judiciary,” the resolution further reads.
