The Bar Council of India (BCI) suspended the license of Advocate Samarth Singh for legal practice with immediate effect over allegations linked to the death of his wife, Twisha Sharma.
Noting that FIR has been registered for alleged dowry death, cruelty and allied offences, the Bar Council said that the allegations are grave and affect the dignity and public image of the legal profession.
The BCI said that the advocate is allegedly absconding and not cooperating with the investigation.
Singh, a graduate from the National Law School of India University, enrolled in 2018. Today, he withdrew his anticipatory bail application from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, seeking to surrender before the trial court. The High Court also issued notice on the State's application to cancel the anticipatory bail application granted to his mother Giribala Singh, an ex-District Judge.
Per news reports Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old woman residing in Noida and a former Miss Pune winner, was discovered dead at her husband's residence in Bhopal's Katara Hills on May 12. The couple had met each other through a dating app about five months ago.
Twisha's family had accused the in-laws of persistent domestic violence and harassment, and therefore had demanded a second post-mortem to ascertain the actual cause of her death. The High Court today allowed their petition for a second autopsy.
The Katara Hills police had registered the FIR against Samarth and his mother for dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.
