In an additional affidavit before the Bombay High Court, Maharashtra cabinet minister Nawab Malik claims he verified NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede's birth records from the birth register maintained by the local civic body.

Malik submitted the affidavit in a defamation suit to substantiate his contention that Sameer Wankhede, despite being born a Muslim secured a central government job claiming to be from the scheduled caste.

The suit is filed by Wankhede's father – Dhyandev- seeking Rs. 1.25 crore in damages for defaming him and his family, and interim directions to restrain Malik from posting anything "defamatory."

On Monday the Bombay High Court asked Wankhede to show Malik's tweets are false while also asking Malik to demonstrate he verified the information against the Wankhedes before posting or giving interviews.

Malik said he has reasonably verified all the documents tweeted and relied by him, which Wankhede alleges to be defamatory. The documents include Wankhede's birth certificate, nikah nama of his first marriage and tweets on social media.

"I say that as far as the Birth Certificate of Sameer Wankhede is concerned, record of the same is maintained by E ward of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. I say that I have verified the same and entry of the birth of Sameer Wankhede, for which the corporation has maintained the record can be found in the register maintain for record of birth at Sr. No. 3744 of concerned year," the affidavit says.

Malik states he got a copy of the nikah nama from the first wife's relative. So far as the remaining social media tweets are concerned, Malik added that the Wankhede's themselves says that the information is reposted from their social media accounts.

"I say that the Plaintiff, in the entire plaint has not averred that the Birth Certificate or Nikah Nama are false and fabricated nor have denied that the posts which are reproduced by the Defendant, are not posted by them," the affidavit states.

The defamation case will be heard today.
