The Delhi High Court has sought an inspection report on a plea filed by a liquor vendor seeking police protection for conduct of its business and for removal of hindrances in its immediate vicinity.

Justice Rekha Palli told the Delhi Government to ensure that the liquor vends, functioning legally, are given police protection.

The Delhi Government apprised the Court that adequate police protection was being given to the licence holders and that site inspection is carried out in order to avoid any ambiguity.

The Court said that the representatives of the petitioner would be free to participate in the said inspection process.

At the outset, Justice Palli expressed concern over the regular filing of various petitions raising similar issues concerning the operation of liquor vends.

According to the plea, some people claiming to be residing in the neighbourhood area, instigated and led by miscreant persons, are coming in the petitioner's way of doing business.

"In the garb of so called protest, the people are becoming law unto themselves. It may even lead to serious law & order problem, if appropriate action is not taken at the earliest," the plea reads.

The petitioner also states that while the its employees were being harassed and threatened on daily basis, it is also apprehended that the protests may create law & order problems in the area.

"The most valuable and cherished right to equality as enshrined in the Constitution of India and guaranteed to all its citizens including the petitioner itself is being infringed by some bad elements of the society who are causing constant hinderance to the petitioner in opening the aforesaid two outlets which the petitioner is legally entitled to open & conduct its business," the plea adds.

The matter will now be heard on December 13.
