Delhi Riots Accused Khalid Saifi Was Non Compliant In Taking Medicine & Treatment: Medical Officer Informs Court

Responding to Delhi riots accused Khalid Saifi's plea seeking treatment after falling sick inside jail, the medical officer has informed Delhi Court that Saifi was neither non compliant in taking medicine nor the treatment. Saifi, also the member of United Against Hate, is presently under judicial custody in a larger conspiracy case into the 2020 Delhi riots. An urgent application was moved before Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat for medical tests and treatment, after stating that Saifi was having high fever, high sugar and diarrhea. During the course of hearing on August 1, Saifi's counsel denied the submissions made by medical officer by arguing that he was not provided proper treatment despite his high sugar.Accordingly, the Medical Officer apprised the Court that he will get the complete checkup done and will also do the continuous monitoring particularly regarding Saifi's high sugar level. While disposing of the application, the Court however directed the Medical Officer to appear in person along with medical report on September 1, the next date of hearing.The FIR against Saifi contains stringent charges including Sections 13, 16, 17, 18 of the UAPA, Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act and Section 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act,1984. The accused are also charged under various offences mentioned under the Indian Penal Code, 1860.He was denied bail by city's Karkardooma Court in the matter on April 8 this year. Saifi had then moved the High Court seeking bail, which is pending adjudication.Main chargesheet was filed against Pinjara Tod members and JNU students Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal, Jamia Millia Islamia student Asif Iqbal Tanha and student activist Gulfisha Fatima.Others who were charge-sheeted included former Congress Councilor Ishrat Jahan, Jamia Coordination Committee members Safoora Zargar, Meeran Haider and Shifa-Ur-Rehman, suspended AAP Councilor Tahir Hussain, Umar Khalid, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Salim Malik, Mohd Salim Khan and Athar Khan.Thereafter, a supplementary chargesheet was filed against former JNU student leader Umar Khalid and JNU student Sharjeel Imam in a case related to the alleged larger conspiracy in the communal violence in northeast Delhi.
