The Election Commission of India has rejected the demand made by opposition parties for verifying the Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails(VVPAT) with EVMS  before counting the votes, reports News18.

Yesterday, leaders from twenty two opposition parties had met the poll panel raising the demand that tallying of VVPAT slips be done prior to the counting of votes. If any discrepancy is found anywhere in the VVPAT verification, hundred per cent counting of VVPAT slips of all polling stations of that Assembly segment should be done, the parties demanded.

The ECI rejected this demand citing the reason that it will delay the results by two or three days.

On April 8, 2019, Supreme Court had directed that printed VVPAT slips from randomly selected 5 polling stations in each assembly segment of a constituency should be matched with EVMs
