    Former Judge of the Bombay High Court, Justice Bhimrao N. Naik, passed away today at the age of 79.

    Born on January 23, 1940 in Karnataka, he enrolled in the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa on October 16, 1964 after obtaining his LLB degree from Pune University. He started his practice from the District and Sessions Court, Solapur and was a Professor in Dayanand Law College, Solapur between 1964 and 1969, until he shifted to the Bombay High Court in November, 1969.

    In Bombay, where he practiced on the Appellate Side in both Criminal and Civil matters for about 28 years, he was the most sought after Counsel, especially in Rent Act, Co-operative Societies and also Constitutional matters.

    He was elected as a Member of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa and was unanimously elected its Chairman in 1986. In 1989, he was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court and he also served as a Special Counsel for Government of Maharashtra and a Standing Counsel for Municipal Corporation of Solapur, Barshi and Miraj. He also worked as a part-time Professor in K. C. Law College, Mumbai for seven years from 1969 to 1976.

    He was elevated as the Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 9, 1992 and was made permanent after two years. However, shortly after such appointment, he resigned from the said position on June 7, 1994, for personal reasons.

    He was a recipient of various awards including Vithalpant Tulpule Gold Medal for Proficiency in Law, Shri. L. B. Bhopatkar Award, The VishwanathParvati Law Prize, etc.

    After resigning, Justice Naik started practicing in the Supreme Court of India for a span of 16 years before returning to Mumbai in 2010, where he started to exclusively work as an Arbitrator.

    Justice Naik is survived by his wife, Smt. Uma Naik, two sons and their families. His elder son, Vineet Naik, is a Senior Advocate at the Bombay High Court and his younger son, Ameet Naik, is the Founder and Managing Partner of a leading Law Firm Naik Naik & Co., Mumbai.
