The Gujarat High Court has extended the life of interim stay orders passed by it and by the Courts subordinate to it till July 2, 2021.

The extension has been granted as a 'last chance' so that in the meanwhile, the advocates and parties may apply before the concerned Court for extension of interim relief.

A Division Bench of Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Bhargav D. Karia noted that at present District Courts, Civil Courts, Family Courts, Labour Courts, Industrial Tribunal and all other Tribunals in the State have started working in physical mode whereas Gujarat High Court has started working with full strength on virtual mode.

Thus, there is not much need for a general extension order and the parties may seek extension of interim reliefs from the respective Courts.

"In the circumstances, as a last chance, we direct that stay orders passed by Gujarat High Court as well as District Courts, Civil Courts, Family Courts, Labour Courts, Industrial Tribunal and all other Tribunals in the State which were extended upto 15th June, 2021 as per order dated 20th April, 2021, shall now remain extended upto 2nd July, 2021, so as to enable the concerned Court to pass appropriate orders on the request to be made by the concerned party or advocate before 2nd July, 2021," it ordered.

In view of closure of Courts amid Covid-19 pandemic, the Gujarat High Court had suo moto extended interim orders of stay passed by the High Court as well as other local Courts. The initial extension was granted on March 27, 2020 and was subsequently extended from time to time.

Case Title: Suo Moto v. State of Gujarat
